We have all seen the on-set of the hottest ruffled dresses in history make their pronounced debut over the past three years. There has never been a better time in history, second to the eighties, to have a craving for thick, crumpled, layered, and pleated dresses. This is a craving that can be justified by simply making your way to the nearest department store. The designers are plentiful and the designers are many. The competition is fierce when it comes to the discovery of the latest ruffled 'it' dress. You can watch any catwalk presentation and see at least three main dress designs that are based around the ruffled, skirt-based, dress.
It is not about uniqueness so much as it is about complimenting attributes. The general idea is the same; to have a dress that is full-fledged 'crump', with a spicy 'new-agey' top design, and accessory options to boot. The only options that designers have for full flexibility in preparing their 'crump' dresses are the top-designs. Each top-designer one must create the newest and hottest top, that does a better job of adorning the bottom ruffles, in an attempt to out-design the last.
Ruffles have even been broadening horizons. The simple design has been elevating from the dress-base to the tops, side, and even the waist. While ruffles on the baseline of a dress do a magnificent job of slenderizing larger thighs and lengthening shorter legs, ruffles that are spreading to other parts of the dress tend to add other characteristics to these places as well. Ruffles around the breast of a dress can add the illusion of a larger cup size, while also trimming the size of large-breasted women. In this way it pulls double-duty. Ruffles in the waist of a dress can do two things as well. For smaller women it can give an appearance of more curvy girth, in an attractive, mysterious way; women with thickness in the waist and hips can be slenderized by the many layers of ruffles and can take away any unsightly lumpiness that may be lurking. Ruffles have become the answer for those women who love stripes but don't exactly have the shape in which to pull them off. It adds texture where it is needed, while giving an amazingly comfortable touch, feel, and grace. And it is true that a comfortable dress is worth its weight in gold.
Be aware of elastic! If there are elastic bands in the waist, or arms, of any ruffled dress then you may want to try it on and move in it for a few moments. Take it for a test run around the dressing room before committing to it. Elastics can cause irritation if it is used as the main support in certain areas of loose, flowing dresses. Take this warning in stride. Ruffles are meant to be extremely comfortable, not itchy, sticky, or pricky.
