The Homecoming King

In the testosterone-filled world of football it's hard to measure the merits of being crowned Homecoming King with being bestowed the same accolade of being distinguished as the team's quarterback. As it were, though, beauty and popularity have rubbed off on the males, too.

Variably across America and Canada, Homecoming Queens are inseparable with their Homecoming Kings. Along with his Queen, the Homecoming King reigns over activities during the school's Homecoming.

Usually happening in late September or October, the Homecoming is a festive tradition held when the high school alumni converge to see their school compete in a football game at their home field. Among activities such as pep rallies and homecoming dances, the student body nominates and elects a Homecoming King during this period.

The University of Missouri is said to have spawned the tradition of Homecoming, back in 1911.

His Majesty's Ascent to the Throne

Ideally males in their senior year are nominated by classmates to the status of Homecoming King, for going out on a limb to contribute to their school. Otherwise claims to this elusive crown are presented on account of sheer face value. Then the entire student body votes for the Homecoming King by secret ballot.

Once the votes are in, coronation night follows sometime later. Sometimes, the identity of the Homecoming King is revealed come the pep rally or school assembly days before the game. Still, the coronation may be held at the homecoming football game itself or at the quintessential dance to follow later on.

Other candidates who were not crowned are designated as escorts, forming the court of the Homecoming King. As with the Homecoming King and Queen, escorts are expected to participate in Homecoming activities as well. Some schools even make it a point to nominate certain underclassmen to the positions of prince, princess, duke, and duchess.

Even before the inevitable power trip, the Homecoming King may already be popular in his own right. But like any aspiring individual hell-bent on higher pedestals, prospective Homecoming Kings have to impress the people at other grade levels, too. Additionally, putting on a mirthful appearance in events leading to coronation count in one's favor. If anything, the prospective Homecoming King will want to make sure to stand out during the "Spirit Week." To accomplish this great feat he can try to be enticing and flirt with the girls. In that case, a little vanity may be required to master this previously, unchartered territory.
