Thousands of homecoming and prom stories shared and questions aswered since 2005.
In the middle of the hot, sultry summer, most people aren't yet thinking about what they'll be wearing when fall arrives and the weather turns cooler. But, if you're planning on attending your school's homecoming dance – typically held in late September or in October – the best time to go shopping for your dress is as actually as early as the late spring! This is the time when styles for the upcoming autumn arrive and the dresses for prom are already on sale.
As soon as you learn what type of affair it will be – informal, semi-formal, or formal – hit the stores and countless websites available to see the incredible number of gorgeous dresses suited for just about anyone's style, taste, and body type. Besides getting a jump on the competition, you'll be giving yourself plenty of time to explore many different options. If you'll be ordering your dress online instead of buying it off the rack, planning ahead will give you enough time to ensure that any necessary alterations are finished before the dance. Just make absolutely certain that you're aware of the store's return policies before making your purchase. Most establishments won't exchange a dress if it's been altered in any way.
Even if you already have a set idea or vision in your head of the perfect dress, keep both your mind and your eyes open and enjoy the shopping part of your homecoming experience. Ask your mom, sister, or a good friend to come along and help you try on a few dresses. They can give you valuable feedback about how you look and what styles they think would be best for the dance. Two heads are definitely better than one in this case – it never hurts to have another set of eyes, especially if you're already convinced that one particular type looks best on you.
Don't worry about not being in style if you buy or start looking for your dress earlier than everyone else seems to be – homecoming dresses rarely change much in their style from one season to the next. Besides, there are many dresses that can be modified or altered in some way either by adding an accessory or simply by changing the look with hair, makeup, and the right pair of shoes. If all else fails, you can't go wrong with a little black dress that works for just about any occasion. Creamy colors, deep browns, and rich reds are also always in style for autumn.
Since the fall months can be rather warm or very cold in some areas, keep this in mind while shopping for your dress early on. If at all possible, forget the local dress stores and bridal shops in your area, where everyone else will eventually be looking, and go to a few neighboring towns. Better yet, use the vastness of the internet to your advantage to find that perfect dress that's sure to be like no other at the dance. Who knows, you just may end up coming home with the crown!
