Thousands of homecoming and prom stories shared and questions aswered since 2005.
You're probably hearing lots of advice from your friends and reading a lot of magazine articles about how to get the boy of your dreams to go to the prom with you. Hate to break the news but the only surefire way to find out if a boy will be your prom date is to ask him yourself!
Yes, girls can ask boys to the prom. It not only makes it easier on everyone, but it also makes you look more attractive. When you ask him it shows the guy that you are confident in yourself- and confidence is always attractive. Maybe you're afraid of being rejected but look at it this way, what's worse?
Hearing "No" or spending the rest of your life wondering if he would have said yes if only you had asked. If you have your heart set on a certain guy for the prom, you can't wait forever for him to work up the nerve to ask you. Some other brave girl may snap him up first, and you might wait so long you end up watching movies by yourself while all your friends are at the prom.
If the guy is already a friend then asking him to the prom should be easy enough, just wait for the topic to come up and spring the question. It’s usually better to wait until it is just the two of you talking because it can make things awkward if you ask in front of a big group of people. If several of your friends are all splitting a limo this is a great way to transition into asking him to the prom. Simply mention that there's room for two more in the limo and ask if he's up for renting a tux.
You should always ask a guy to the prom in person, but if you're just not brave enough yet it's okay to call him at home and ask. Leaving him a note in his locker, mailing a letter, or sending an email should be avoided. If he doesn't respond you won't know if it's because he's not brave enough to just say no, or if he didn't get your note. Plus you wouldn't want anyone else to read the letter!
If he does say no, then simply look him in the eye, give him a smile, and end on a friendly note. If you don't get overemotional about it, maybe he'll at least save you dance at the prom even if he couldn't be your date, then move on to the next guy on your list.
