Homecoming 2010

Shake and Shimmer

There has been one recurring trend viewed at every 2010 red carpet event thus far and every girl planning her Homecoming attire should take notice. With such a large crowd you can usually expect differences to be seen across the red carpet but this year was very different. From Penelope Cruz to Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart to Tina Fey, the one style that was heavily leaned upon was: the shine! From sparkly embellishments to shimmering fabrics the trend of the hour is certainly “shimmer”. We are not talking over the top. There is a huge difference between too much and just enough so be aware of the boundaries when planning your outfit to this year's dance.

The patterns, embellishments, and fabric combinations are truly endless when you are on the hunt for eye-catching shimmer. Take a few pointers from some of the best. From Marchesa to Yves Saint Laurent to Versace- the shimmering trends are dependent upon the fabrics preferred by the designer, and of course by you. Some designers mix sheen material with glistening designs, organza over silk and embellishments to bring life and shimmer to a gown.

Flatter Yourself

There are certainly rules to follow when seeking out a shimmering gown. Always remain cautious when approaching any flamboyant colors. The whole idea behind wearing a shiny gown is to be reflective and draw attention to the gown, but you do not want to attract the wrong types of stares. Always be sure that the color of the gown flows seamlessly with the color of your skin. You may have adored the red-hot, shimmery gown worn by Cruz but if red is definitely not your best color then do not try to force what isn't there. We all have colors that flow seamlessly with our complexion and once you find these tints you will never go back to 'experimenting'. There is a process called “skin tone color analysis” that teaches you how to wear almost any color by learning the shades and intensities of each hue that complement your skin type. So just because you love orange but haven't found a flattering shade to suit you doesn't mean there isn't a way to pull it off; maybe burnt sienna is what you need?

You can pull off a quick and seamless color without all of the hassle of doing color homework. Just try to pin-point a celebrity that you feel has a striking resemblance to your own skin tone and take note of the shades that flatter them best. Try the shades on yourself but adjust the body shape of the dress according to your own size. It is easy to find your own star-studded look when you know the right tricks of the trade.
