Are plus size prom dress more expensive?

I was recently looking for plus-size prom dresses and the shop I went to told me that alterations might be more expensive...because the prom dress is plus-size. this seems cruel and totally unfair. have you any of you girls experienced this?

I am a size 34, and could not find any "stock" plus size prom dresses that fit me. I wound up spending $1300.00, but I only have one prom, and my boyfriend is going to love it!!
