Curious about the gothic look

My friends are telling me that gothic is weird but I kind of like to try to wear a gothic prom dress and see if it suits me right. Do all gothic prom dresses look weird?

Name: wiccan angel | Date: February 27, 2007, 3:50 pmstop bein so evil all of you. no-one is a prep. anyway. i think you should go for the gothic look, just don't over do the make-up. i've seen many girls wear black lip stick and chunky black nail varnish but they look mancy. go with what you feel good in, but like i said, don't over do it with the gothic chic look. be confident in your self. you will look amazing, trust me.Name: LT | Date: March 12, 2007, 5:44 pmPlease do not let some of the above posters get you down. They are part of the melodramatic goths who try so hard to be "gothier than thou" and they also seem like kindergoths. Most Goths I know (I consider myself a punk goth) would feel fine in many different types of dresses. I would say that the dress needs to be you, and if you are goth then it will somehow be unique because you are unique. That doesn't mean it needs to be black or in full Victorian age. Remember that whatever dress you pick needs to be something that you feel comfortable dancing in (and yes goths LOVE to dance, in fact it's one thing that I've personally seen seems to connect all goths beside the love of the macabre and romantically haunting music). And you may just get a chance to dance to goth music. With the popularity of goth lite/black metal/moody hardcore punk lite bands like Evanescence and AFI, you may actually get that chance. Or if your school is oh so cool you can request your own song, eh? If you are just getting involved in the goth subculture, I can guarantee that you may lose friends over it. Unfortunately, people have a hard time with changes. Please remember that your friends are probably not use to this "you" and will have to adjust. True friends will smile, may joke or even frown at the new you, but will love you all the same. Please give them time to adjust before marking them off, but be wise enough to know when it is time to back off from a friend who becomes hateful or disrespectful because you are interested in gothic things. The best thing you can do is not be a goth stereotype. Most people do not believe I am a goth because I don't talk about Poe or wear black 24/7 but you'll find me in a goth club chatting and dancing like every other goth. Good luck on the dress and hope you have a great prom. Name: MEOW | Date: March 22, 2007, 2:55 pmyou guys are freakin dumb and stupid. first of all most of the people that are real goths dont even wear black. Name: Shut Up | Date: March 27, 2007, 10:48 pm*Ahem* "Gothics/Goths" aren't ignorant high school girls that go on PROM DRESS FORUMS and cyber scream at others without any intellectual wit whatsoever and make themselves look like completely immature. While your opinion of being "gothic/goth" may be dressing in black with studs or dyed hair and dark make up while listening to Panic! At The Disco or Taking Back Sunday, your misconception begs to be corrected. "Gothics/Goths" originate from a Germanic tribe of brutal savage and smelly men that invaded much of Europe during the Dark Ages. So if you want to be considered one of those, be my guest. The "gothic/goth" influence on modern culture comes from the offshoot from the British post-punk genre developing a multitude of new fashions that seemed bizarre and gore-like and darkly centered. It was sort of like the flapper in the 20's that symbolized female rebellion. The goth subculture symbolized a darker sound and outlook. Though music is a large influence on the goth society and though many genres are associated with such a title, goths can't be classified on those grounds alone. Fashion, deriving from many eras, areas, and subjects (such as the Victorian/Renaissance era, Halloween, Japanese cosplay, digital/rave ages), is also diversed. Therefore since the fashion is too influenced by already existent fashions, being a GOTH just by fashion is a difficult task. Just label yourselves as I label myself... too damn bored to do anything else and pretend to be something that I have little knowledge of. The only difference between all that criticize on forums and me is that you're pathetic and I'm intellectual. Now, tell me something about how I'm not goth...Name: Shut Up | Date: March 27, 2007, 10:48 pm*Ahem* "Gothics/Goths" aren't ignorant high school girls that go on PROM DRESS FORUMS and cyber scream at others without any intellectual wit whatsoever and make themselves look like completely immature. Now, tell me something about how I'm not goth...Name: StillMoonLight | Date: March 28, 2007, 4:15 pmOK there is nothing weird about the goth style and if you want to try it out try it and if you dont really like then dont wear it. do what you want. I'm one of the teens in high school that are stereotyped as a goth. and ive noticed there is something at "Goths" have in common and thats thier love of darker colors. they are not all the same. we all listen to different types of music, watch different movies, and have different beliefs. and I dont know anyone in the large group of friends i have at school who hate preps. you cant judge people by how they dress. its just not right!Name: j | Date: April 2, 2007, 2:34 amomg.....u peole are all insane, get a life..and definetly not to the gothic dresses being weird...then again it depends on what suits u. u don't want to go in looking like ur there for a halloween party...find something that looks right on youName: Saige | Date: April 3, 2007, 3:26 pmTry it if you want. no one can judge you expet yourself. its your prom have fun wiht your style! :)Name: Emily | Date: April 6, 2007, 8:56 pmThe girl just wants to clarify things and here you are insulting her about her ignorance.
