My friends are telling me that gothic is weird but I kind of like to try to wear a gothic prom dress and see if it suits me right. Do all gothic prom dresses look weird?

What may be to you may not be to someone else. I would recomend looking at some goth magazines (Gothic Beauty is really good with keeping up to date fashion advice) and just kind of go from there. Thrift stores are wonders. Try things on that you thought you would never wear. Believe me, I know from experince that things look diffrent on you than they do on hangers. Goth is a style and people experiment with their own personal styles all the time. And as for goth being wierd, well that is what people perceive it as, like we are all going to cast some hex on them and help the devil take over the world. I mean people are close-minded hypocrites with nothing better to do then judge people based on appearances. You shouldn't care what they think, you should have seen my parents when i started dressing in the so called "goth" style in 7th grade, they completely flipped and started being judgmental of my friends, but as they got to know them, they found out that they were all at the top of our class and were really into music and art, like i was. So they accepted it, i mean i still get wierd looks in the hall but that is only because they dont know me, so screw them. I say you should dress how you want without worrying about the stupid stereotypical society, I call high school.
