Designer dresses are expensive

My mom offered to pay for my dress, but I don't want to make her shell out a bunch of cash for something I'm going to only wear once. At the same time, I do want a nice designer dress that I'll always remember. How much should I expect to have her pay? $100? $500? $1000? It all just sounds kind of crazy to me.
