I'm pretty good at sewing, but materials are still pretty expensive

Do you guys think it would be worth it to sew my own dress? I might make a really good one, but there's a chance I'll do something wrong and it will look goofy. Also, it still won't be super cheap because fabric costs a lot. Does anyone have some cute patterns that don't use much fabric?
