If you are even considering making your own prom gown or wedding gown etc, make a practice dress out of muslim first or a cheap fabric. It's a win win situation. You win if the dress is perfect with your practice dress - you'll have this dress AND your prom gown. You win if you make it out of an inexpensive fabric and hate the outcome or the way it fits. If it's the fit you don't like, have someone mark up the practice dress with a fabric marker WHILE YOU ARE WEARING IT so that IF you need to let it in here, let it own there, etc. etc. you know exactly where the adjustment(s) needs to be made. Remember if you're 5' you can't wear a standard pattern and when you alter formals, you don't alter formal patterns from the bottom, you alter them where the pattern tells you to alter them. Remember, there ARE petite patterns. After looking at some homemade gown pictures just now, don't look like a daffodil (green and yellow) and orange and pink do NOT go together and beware of fabrics that look like curtains - this is not the 1800s. If you're hippy, steer clear of full skirts. If you are not an experienced sewer, don't do it or find someone to help you through the entire process. Also, you don't want to look like a clown on prom night!! You want to make a lasting impression on your classmates - the WOW factor! To the 2009-2010 formal wear wearers, have a great year!
